14 January 2009 Motor insurance customers 'need to be vigilant'

Motorists warned not to leave keys in ignition Car insurance customers are being urged not to make it easy for thieves by leaving vehicles unattended with the key in the ignition.

Thames Valley police issued this warning following an incident during which a couple had their motor stolen while they were unloading rubbish for recycling in a car park in Warfield.

Investigating officer PC Marc Boyd said drivers needed to be more security-conscious.

He stated: "I would advise motorists never to leave their keys in the car, even if it is unattended for just a few seconds."

Police believe the latest theft is linked to a previous incident in the same supermarket car park, when a 63-year-old woman was dragged from her vehicle.

The victim's four-year-old grandson was in the back of the car and his grandmother dislocated her arm attempting to get him out.

After driving the car a short distance, the thief let the boy go.

People who leave vehicles unattended with the key in the ignition may find their insurer is reluctant to pay out if the motor is stolen.
