13 January 2009 'Cut your chances of a home insurance claim this year'

Residents urged to increase security Residents in West Yorkshire who do not want to start 2009 with a home insurance claim are being urged to make improving security their new year's resolution.

Police in the area have launched a campaign to reduce the number of people falling victim to burglaries in the county.

Detective Inspector Duncan MacNay, the officer in charge of the initiative, urged householders to view their properties from the perspective of a thief.

He explained if residents think they could gain entry without a key, burglars will no doubt hold the same opinion.

"If people work with us, they can take some simple and straightforward steps to reduce the chance of them becoming a victim," the officer added.

Householders are also being reminded that a quarter of all burglaries do not involve forced entry.

Meanwhile, West Yorkshire police recently checked 1,064 houses in the area to see if properties had been left insecure.

Some 96 homes were found to have unlocked doors.
