12 January 2009 Car insurance customers 'should get under the bonnet'

Motorists urged to carry out routine checks People keen to avoid using their breakdown insurance cover are being encouraged to get under the bonnet every now and again.

Haynes Publishing said motorists should not assume that servicing appointments are sufficient to keep a car running smoothly.

It stated drivers should conduct routine vehicle checks in between trips to the garage.

The publisher of car manuals said people who failed to follow this advice may find their motor lets them down at the most inconvenient of times.

"For years it works fine and then suddenly one frosty morning your car won't start," it explained.

The company also pointed out that anyone can conduct routine checks.

It claimed motorists should not be put off by the misconception that modern vehicles are too complicated for the average person to work on.

Meanwhile, Haynes Publishing recently warned drivers they were risking a puncture if they did not check their tyre pressure regularly.
