08 January 2009 Drop in temperature 'could see car insurance claims rise'

Motorists urged to be more security-conscious Motorists who would prefer not to start 2009 with a car insurance claim may be well-advised to heed a warning from Greater Manchester police.

The force has urged drivers not to leave vehicles unattended with the keys in the ignition while they defrost on cold mornings.

It explained on one day earlier this week, some six motors were stolen in the region under such circumstances.

Police said - as the cold weather tightens its grip on the UK - it is vital other people do not make the same mistake.

They added all motorists were at risk, regardless of the type of cars they own.

Chief Inspector Haydn Roberts stated: "It is not only high-powered vehicles that are targeted and so our advice to all drivers is to stay in their vehicle when defrosting."

People who do have their cars stolen after leaving them unattended may find they lose access to cheap car insurance cover.
