Drivers who do not want to jeopardise their cheap car insurance premiums may want to pay heed to some tips from Europcar.

The vehicle rental company has compiled a list of hints which could help keep motorists safe while on the road this winter.

It suggested people allow extra time for journeys when the weather is bad, as well as making sure windows are completely free of ice and mist before setting off.

Europcar also advised motorists getting behind the wheel before 08:00 GMT or after 15:30 GMT to give their eyes time to adjust to the dark prior to starting the engine.

Marketing director Catriona Lougher said: "At this time of year particularly, drivers need to take extra care on the roads."

She added: "The risk of bad weather means motorists should take added precautions."
