07 January 2009 Drivers 'should check more than their breakdown cover'
Motorists need to do more than simply ensuring their car insurancebreakdown cover is up-to-date this winter, it has been claimed.Kwik-Fit urged drivers to equip their vehicles with emergency items that could prove useful if they find themselves stranded at the roadside in sub-zero temperatures.
Research by the company found the majority of motorists in the UK drive without winter survival kits, despite the fact one in four people have broken down in freezing conditions.
The study revealed 21.7 million people do not carry warm clothing in their cars and 4.3 million drivers do not travel with any emergency items whatsoever.
David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit, commented: "Whilst most people might think it won't happen to them, our research shows that the chances of being stranded in the winter are pretty high."
Last month, Kwik-Fit announced it had produced a 2009 Tyre Wall of Shame calendar to remind vehicle owners that poorly-maintained tyres can lead to accidents and subsequent car insurance claims.
