02 January 2009 Drivers 'may regret ditching breakdown cover'

Millions of motorists may regret ditching their breakdown insurance on Monday morning, it has been claimed.

According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), up to three million drivers may find themselves stranded on January 5th 2009.

The organisation explained people who have decided not to renew their breakdown cover in a bid to save money may end up having to shell out even more cash to get a mechanic to come out and get their cars started next week.

It stated drivers who do not use their vehicles for several days and leave them standing about in freezing temperatures could well struggle to start the engine when they do get behind the wheel again.

Andrew Davis, director of ETA, said: "It's not just people who can feel flat following the new year festivities.

"The sub-zero temperatures predicted for early January mean many car batteries will fail."

It is thought that Brits will see temperatures fall to as little as minus four degrees C overnight on January 8th, according to the BBC.
