31 December 2008 New technology 'could reduce van insurance claims'
Proposals which recommend a widespread adoption of Intelligent Speed Adaption could help cut van insurance claims, it has been suggested.According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), the plans being considered by government could cut road deaths and injuries by 29 per cent.
The system uses global satellite positioning to pinpoint a driver's location and can then control the maximum speed that person is able to achieve.
However, director of research and policy Neil Greig said motorists may resist a scheme which dictates how fast they can to drive.
Fleet managers have demonstrated a lack of support because they do not believe breaking speed limits necessarily compromises the safety of the person behind the wheel, he added.
Mr Greig claimed before the technology can be introduced "an understandable deep-rooted concern about Big Brother will have to be overcome".
In other news, IAM recently claimed motorists may be able to avoid van insurance claims by being extra cautious in poor weather.
