23 December 2008 Drink-drivers in Northern Ireland 'risking car insurance claims'

Motorists urged not to drink-drive The number of road users in Northern Ireland who are risking an insurance claim by getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol appears to be on the rise, according to police figures.

Recent data released by the force showed, during the first fortnight of their winter anti drink-drive campaign, 199 motorists and bikers were caught while over the limit - a nine per cent increase on the same two-week period in 2007.

Commenting on the figures, Acting Chief Inspector Rosie Leech stated: "Drinking and driving kills, maims and wrecks families."

She added: "Police will not tolerate people who insist on driving after having taken drugs or drink."

Ms Leech also pointed out motorists may struggle to secure any cover, never mind cheap car insurance, after being convicted of taking to the road while under the influence of alcohol.

Earlier this month, Northern Ireland police unveiled the new breathalyser they are using in their anti drink-drive campaign.
