22 December 2008 Motorists urged to be vigilant against thieves
People who do not want to spend their Christmas break sorting out a car insurance claim are being urged to be on their guard against criminals.Tracker - the stolen vehicle recovery systems company - warned a number of motors had been stolen across the UK in recent weeks after being left with the engine running on icy mornings.
As a result, the firm compiled a list of common car-related crimes and urged motorists to be vigilant.
It highlighted burglaries where vehicle keys are taken as one of the most significant threats to motorists.
However, it added there was a growing number of instances where fraudsters were stealing the identities of drivers in order to forge documents and obtain a duplicate key.
Tracker spokesman Stuart Chapman said: "Gone are the days when cars were stolen by smashing the side window and hot wiring the ignition."
Despite this warning, the group recently reported Home Office figures had shown thefts of vehicles fell 12 per cent during the year ending June 2008.
