Drivers who do not want to lose their cheap car insurance premiums - as the result of an accident - are being urged to take it easy on the roads over Christmas.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) warned driving conditions can be particularly hazardous at this time of year, adding it was important people were cautious when behind the wheel.

It suggested drivers allow extra time for journeys and check the weather forecast before leaving the house.

The organisation also advised motorists to inform a loved one of their estimated time of arrival and intended route.

In addition to this, IAM also said ensuring items were properly secured in the car could help keep stress levels to a minimum this Christmas.

"The last thing you need is a broken present after all the shops are shut," it explained.

Meanwhile, the group recently urged motorists to give themselves plenty of time to recover the morning after a party before taking to the road - in order to ensure they do not drive while still over the limit.
