19 December 2008 Home insurance customers need to be careful at Christmas

Police warn residents to be on their guard Residents in Dundee are being urged not to neglect security this Christmas if they want to avoid a home insurance claim.

Tayside police have issued this advice after 13 properties were targeted by burglars in the city over the course of a week.

Chief Inspector Kevin Lynch said people needed to be on their guard against criminals, by ensuring doors and windows are locked to prevent burglars simply strolling in.

He commented: "Having the family home violated in this way is a horrible experience at any time of the year - it is all the more heartbreaking at Christmas."

Mr Lynch said thieves would be looking for any opportunity at this time of year to gain access into people's homes and he urged residents to make life as difficult as possible for criminals.

Elsewhere, West Yorkshire police have called on people in Wakefield to be on their guard against bogus callers turning up on their doorsteps and trying to gain access into their properties during the festive season.
