19 December 2008 Current laws 'can be used to cut car insurance claims'

Extra traffic officers 'could help stop drink-driving' The number of car insurance claims made in the UK may be reduced by better enforcement of drink-driving laws, it has been suggested.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), there is nothing wrong with the current legislation - it just needs to be implemented more effectively.

The group said this would only be possible if there were more traffic officers on the road.

IAM made these comments after the Department for Transport unveiled plans to give police the power to hand out instant fines and penalty points to drink-drivers.

Director of policy and research Neil Greig admitted occurrences of drink-driving had fallen over recent years, but added the figures seemed to have hit a plateau.

He stated: "We seem to have reached the hardcore of people who are willing to risk it."

Mr Greig added some drivers were probably prepared to take their chances when it came to drink-driving because the likelihood of them being caught is "very low".
