18 December 2008 Buses could cut claims

Stagecoach bus Buses could help to cut the number of comprehensive and third party insurance claims made in the UK, it has been suggested.

According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the backs of some buses are going to be kitted out with flashing signs which are activated when a following vehicle is tailgating or breaking the speed limit.

The Tailguardian system is initially going to be fitted to Stagecoach buses, the organisation reported.

Capable of detecting if a vehicle is breaking the two-second distance rule, the technology will illuminate a sign displaying the area's speed limit when a motorist is deemed to be driving too close or fast.

ETA director Andrew Davis said the innovation was a good idea.

He stated: "Overtaking large vehicles can be treacherous, so the back end of a bus is an ideal place to remind drivers if they are speeding or tailgating."

Meanwhile, ETA recently reported a road had been created which generates electricity when traffic drives over it.
