18 December 2008 Drivers urged to adjust their tyre pressure

Flat tyre Motorists who do not want to end up relying on their breakdown insurance over Christmas should check their tyre pressure before embarking on long journeys, it has been claimed.

TyreSafe explained vehicles may require different tyre pressure levels when carrying additional passengers and luggage, compared to when they are transporting a normal load.

It stated any information motorists required on this would be contained in their car's handbook.

Commenting on the number of breakdowns reported during the festive season, chairman of TyreSafe Rob Beddis said: "Although fewer cars are on the road over the Christmas period, the number suffering from tyre-related problems is alarming."

He added failing to carry out simple tyre checks could result in a blowout and a serious accident.

Meanwhile, TyreSafe previously reported that in winter motorists could benefit from fitting cold weather tyres - as they are specifically designed to deal with dangerous driving conditions.
