Car insurance customers whose new year's resolution is to buy a more eco-friendly vehicle may want to consider a Ford model.

According to the manufacturer, its ECOnetic range allows drivers to make significant savings at the pump and cut their carbon footprint through the use of a smart gear change alert.

The gear-shift indicator alerts motorists to the best possible time to change gears.

Ford explained this encouraged the person behind the wheel to move through the gears more quickly - reducing fuel consumption as it avoids unnecessarily high engine speed.

In addition to this, the manufacturer claimed the system cut CO2 emissions and reduced wear on transmission and engine parts.

Tim Winstanley from the carmaker said: "The indicator provides drivers with a helpful aid to using less fuel and encourages a smoother driving style."

Ford's ECOnetic range includes a Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo.

Meanwhile, Ford revealed earlier this week that prices for the new Focus RS would start at £24,995.
