16 December 2008 Car insurance customers 'need to prepare for winter weather'
Motorists who do not want to jeopardise their cheap car insurance are being encouraged to prepare properly for journeys undertaken in poor driving conditions. The Highways Agency has launched a campaign highlighting the possible consequences for motorists who take to the road without giving thought to potential problems they may encounter.
It explained it had come up with the initiative in response to research which found 44 per cent of women and 62 per cent of men would be reluctant to change their travel plans after a severe weather warning.
Highways Agency spokesman Derek Turner commented: "We recognise that travel can be essential, so if you do decide to continue with your journey then please make sure you are prepared for the conditions."
He advised drivers to carry out basic car checks before setting off on lengthy journeys and suggested all cars should be equipped with an emergency severe weather kit.
Last month, the Highways Agency reported it was ditching its yellow gritters and replacing them with a new £45 million fleet to tackle snow and ice.
