As the festive season approaches, people should think about checking their home insurance, it has been claimed.

TH March - a firm of brokers - said providers may offer an automatic increase in cover at this time of year, as many customers will receive valuable presents.

However, the company stated people would need to check this was the case with their provider.

Spokesman Neil McFarlane also advised residents to ascertain exactly what they are covered for.

"Policies will have inner limits built in regarding valuables - and the definition of valuables will change with some companies applying to jewellery and some to plasma TVs," he explained.

TH March stated people should read their insurance policies and - if they are in any doubt - contact their providers to ensure the cover is adequate and will cover additional Christmas gifts.

It added - where there is any uncertainty - valuable items like jewellery should be insured separately.
