12 December 2008 Car insurance customers 'do not benefit from congestion charging'
Drivers already shelling out for car insurance, fuel and vehicle excise duty should not have to pay to travel down certain roads, it has been claimed.Speaking before the result of the Greater Manchester congestion charge vote was announced, the Association of British Drivers (ABD) said residents should reject it.
Earlier today, it was revealed that this had actually happened.
ABD said road pricing can only work when drivers do not have a choice of routes - such as when crossing the Severn Bridge.
It claimed when there was an option, motorists would always go for the cheaper alternative.
Commenting on the concept of congestion charging, ABD spokesperson Nigel Humphries stated: "The whole idea of paying for using the roads, while we've already been taxed £45 billion, is disgraceful and can only make ... [driving] difficult."
Meanwhile, the Department for Transport recently revealed it was considering introducing faster lanes for road users willing to shell out for a quicker journey on busy routes during peak times.
