08 December 2008 Northern Ireland police crack down on drink-drivers
A police crack down on drink-driving in Northern Ireland could see the number of car insurance claims made over the festive period start to fall. The force announced so far this winter it has already arrested some 3,800 for being behind the wheel while over the limit.
Last year, 629 people were arrested during the same seasonal campaign.
Assistant Chief Constable Roy Toner said the increase in numbers was "frightening" and stated the police were going to do all they could to tackle the problem.
Commenting on the potentially life-shattering consequences of drink driving, he stated: "It kills, maims, wrecks families and communities."
Mr Toner went on to urge all motorists to think about the possible effects of their actions.
He also warned that people who were caught drink-driving would probably struggle to find car insurance in future.
In November, police in Northern Ireland urged motorists to be cautious, following the deaths of three people in traffic accidents in one evening.
