08 December 2008 Police scheme could see house insurance claims fall

Police to watch unoccupied houses Home insurance claims in West Yorkshire could be set to drop, following the reintroduction of a police initiative.

The Eccleshill neighbourhood police team have started handing out temporary unoccupied house forms again, which local residents can fill in to let officers know if they are planning to go away on holiday.

When they are notified that a property is going to be unoccupied, patrols are able to keep an eye on the house, so that it is less likely to be targeted by burglars.

Commenting on the scheme, Inspector Pete Tuff said: "This is an excellent idea which will benefit residents and police by making us more aware of vulnerable properties in our neighbourhoods."

He added the initiative should provide people in the area with valuable peace of mind when they have to leave their houses empty.

Meanwhile, West Yorkshire police recently reported a burglary crackdown had seen 44 people arrested for burglary offences in north-east Leeds in two weeks.
