05 December 2008 Penalties for uninsured drivers 'should be tougher'

ABI: Penalties should be tougher Bigger deterrents need to be introduced to prevent people getting behind the wheel without car insurance, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of British Insurers, motorists are unlikely to be put off by fines which cost them less than cover.

Spokesperson for the group Malcolm Tarling stated: "The penalties do not reflect the seriousness of the crime and do not act as a sufficient deterrent - and this has been the case for some time."

He said a more suitable and effective punishment for uninsured drivers would be to take their cars and crush them.

Mr Tarling did acknowledge that fines could be part of the solution.

However, he insisted they could not work on their own.

Meanwhile, recent research published in the Institute of Advanced Motorists' magazine revealed the people most likely to get behind the wheel without car insurance were young men living in highly populated areas.
