Motorists who want to reduce their chances of having to claim on their car insurance should take good care of their tyres, according to Protyre.

The group said it was particularly important at this time of year to make sure that tyres were up to scratch.

It explained cold weather can make roads more hazardous and put increased pressure on this particular car part.

The company stated as tyres are the only section of a vehicle in contact with the ground, it is important they are in tip-top condition.

However, it added too many drivers are taking to the road with bald or under-inflated tyres.

Retail manager Simon Hiorns claimed: "Only one in five tyres on cars seen at Protyre outlets have tyres that are correctly inflated."

He warned cutting costs when it came to tyres was a dangerous decision.

Earlier this year, Protyre reported 75 per cent of drivers had tyres which did not meet minimum legal standards.
