04 December 2008 Police urge motorists to be on their guard against thieves

Caroline Johnson People who leave their unattended cars running on cold mornings may end up having to make a motor insurance claim, police have warned.

Officers in Milton Keynes made this statement following the theft of a BMW earlier this week.

A female motorist left the key in the ignition of her car while she went back inside her house.

The victim told police she thought the vehicle would be safe as it was parked on a gated driveway.

However, when she came back someone had stolen the car and opened the electric gates with the fob on the keys.

Commenting on the incident, crime prevention adviser Ed Allington said: "Thieves will be out looking for exactly this kind of opportunity on cold mornings, so I would urge everyone with a vehicle not to leave it running."

Earlier this week Caroline Johnson from Langley was seriously injured after she was knocked down by an offender who had taken her vehicle while she was scraping ice off it.
