04 December 2008 Motorists 'should not leave keys downstairs at night'

Car keys Drivers keen to avoid a car insurance claim should keep their vehicle keys with them at night, it has been suggested.

Thames Valley police issued this guidance following a burglary in Aylesbury where the victim had their motor stolen.

While the vehicle owner was asleep upstairs, thieves entered the house, removed the car keys and took a Mitsubishi Evo from the driveway.

Crime reduction adviser Kama Wager said motorists could take a number of steps to reduce their chances of having a motor stolen.

She said keeping vehicle keys in the bedroom at night was a good first step and also suggested people install a collapsible bollard on their drive.

Ms Wager explained both of these measures would make life much more difficult for car criminals.

In other news from the Thames Valley area, schoolchildren have been getting involved in a campaign to encourage speeding motorists to slow down.
