25 November 2008 Government proposals 'could improve road safety'

Alistair Darling Some of the measures set out in Alistair Darling's pre-Budget report could see the number of car insurance claims made in the UK fall, it has been suggested.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists has claimed reducing VAT should encourage more drivers to buy newer vehicles.

It explained, as modern cars tend to be safer, this could reduce the number of serious accidents and fatalities on Britain's roads.

Neil Greig, director at IAM, said people did not have to buy brand new vehicles to enjoy improved levels of safety.

He stated: "The increased safety features of newer … used vehicles are going to have a beneficial effect in terms of crash protection."

Mr Greig also claimed government plans to start improving the motorway network in 2009 rather than 2011 could also cut the number of accidents on UK roads.

In other news, IAM recently said, if motorists wanted to avoid a car insurance claim, it was advisable to allow extra time for journeys when the weather is bad.
