25 November 2008 Uninsured drivers have their vehicles seized

Police Northumberland police have seized 25 vehicles because the people behind the wheel did not have car insurance, it has been revealed.

Operation Magnitude made use of automatic number plate recognition in order to identify vehicles which the authorities suspected were being driven by criminals.

Chief Inspector Simon Packham said the success of the initiative was good news for honest motorists.

He said: "It is a fact that uninsured cars are used by criminals to commit crime.

"By taking them off the roads we can … cut crime and improve the safety of other road users."

The people who have had their vehicles seized have a week to produce a valid motor insurance policy and pay a fine or their cars will be crushed.

In other news, a recent West Yorkshire police initiative to prevent criminals from using the road saw 40 penalty notices handed out for a variety of offences.
