More needs to be done to try and cut the number of people who will end up having to make a home insurance claim as a result of flooding, it has been reported.

According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), it makes sense to prepare as much as possible now in case a natural disaster strikes.

Commenting on the effect these type of events have on homeowners, technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill said: "It is a terrible thing if you are flooded."

He explained: "You are out of your home for many months while the work is done, you are really inconvenienced [and] you lose treasured possessions."

People living in areas prone to flooding should be given whatever help is available, Mr Trudgill added.

This follows calls from Biba for the government to team up with the insurance industry to protect homes and businesses across the UK that are at risk.
