21 November 2008 Motorists warned to be vigilant to avoid car insurance claims

Christmas shopper Drivers who do not want to spend the festive season sorting out a car insurance claim have been warned to be on their guard.

Airedale and North Bradford police have said the amount of vehicle crime at this time of year often goes up, as the darker nights mean thieves are more likely to get away unseen.

They reminded motorists to always lock their cars when leaving them unattended, even for short periods of time.

People who were out and about doing their Christmas shopping in particular were advised never to leave presents in unoccupied vehicles.

PC Dave Bale from the Airedale and North Bradford Crime Reduction Unit said: "It only takes a few seconds to take personal valuables out of your car when you leave it and by doing so you … reduce your risk of becoming a victim."

In related news, police and partnership agencies in Wigan have organised a day of action to try and cut vehicle crime in the area.
