Motorists keen to cut spending on things like fuel, road tax and car insurance may want to consider an eco-friendly model, it has been suggested.

Whatgreencar stated the fact money is tight for many road users at the moment means there has never been a better time to go green.

Director of the organisation Ben Lane said many motorists had already opted for smaller, more economical vehicles in a bid to beat the credit crunch.

Commenting on the effect of the economic downturn on the automotive industry, he claimed: "The only winners have been the manufacturers of fuel-efficient cars in the mini and supermini segments."

Whatgreencar has compiled a list of the top ten environmentally-friendly models in the UK.

Among the vehicles recommended were the electric MyCar from Nice, the Toyota Aygo and the Fiat 500.

Motorists may find smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles qualify for cheap car insurance as a result of their engine size.
