20 November 2008 Government to crack down on dangerous drivers
A government initiative to stop dangerous driving could see the number of car insurance claims made in the UK fall.Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick has announced proposals to tackle a variety of problems across the country, including drug and drink drivers.
He revealed the police are to be given support in enforcing current laws, adding the possibility of changing things like the drink drive limit would also be explored.
Government statistics show some 3,000 people are killed on Britain's roads every year.
In a bid to cut this number, Mr Fitzpatrick said the government was looking at handing out tougher penalties to rogue motorists.
He stated: "We must crack down on the most dangerous drivers - the selfish minority whose reckless behaviour can have a catastrophic impact on innocent victims and their families."
In other news, the government recently launched a campaign to educate young children on road safety.
