19 November 2008 Rural villages 'worst for car crime'

Rural village A village in East Sussex has been revealed as the worst area for thefts from and of vehicles.

Research by moneysupermrket.com found four per cent of drivers in Winchelsea had made a motor insurance claim related to stolen property in the past five years.

The second and third worst areas in the country were revealed as Saltburn-by-the-sea in Cleveland and Godstone in Surrey - with over three per cent of motorists in these areas making a claim over the same period of time.

Commenting on the findings, Andy Leadbetter from moneysupermarket.com stated: "It is quite a shock to see smaller rural villages snatching the top spots in the UK for car theft."

He suggested people concerned about vehicle crime could protect their motors by fitting an alarm and using a steering wheel lock.

Meanwhile, moneysupermarket.com recently reported drivers caught behind the wheel after drinking alcohol could see their car insurance premiums increase by 82 per cent.
