18 November 2008 Drop in uninsured drivers 'will make UK roads safer'
The fact the number of people getting behind the wheel without car insurance is falling is great news for all the honest motorists in the UK, it has been claimed.According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), as well as adding money onto the annual premiums of other road users, uninsured drivers are also more likely to cause an accident.
It stated people without car insurance are more likely to be driving an unroadworthy vehicle and more likely to be convicted of being drunk behind the wheel.
These comments were made after government figures showed the number of rogue motorists in the UK had dropped since 2006.
In the space of two years, the proportion of uninsured Brits has reportedly decreased from 1.9 per cent to 1.2 per cent.
Spokesperson for ABI Malcolm Tarling stated: "Uninsured drivers are not only expensive, they are also a danger on the road, so anything we can do to reduce the number is good news for everyone."
