17 November 2008 Police 'are catching more uninsured drivers'

Police cars The police are becoming increasingly adept at catching motorists without insurance, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of British Insurers, more uninsured drivers are being caught in the UK at the moment than ever before.

Spokesperson for the group Malcom Tarling said technology, such as an automatic number plate recognition system and a database showing details of all motor insurance policies, was helping the authorities in their efforts.

He stated: "More and more uninsured drivers are being trapped."

Mr Tarling added the success of the police was also serving as a deterrent to other people considering taking to the road without cover.

He added the process of catching uninsured drivers was becoming a lot more efficient as police could check at the roadside whether or not a driver has the necessary protection.

Meanwhile, figures from the Motor Insurers' Bureau have shown uninsured drivers add £30 a year to the premiums of honest road users.
