17 November 2008 Parents 'can help kids stay safe behind the wheel'

Driving in the dark Mums and dads, who are keen to see the cost of their teenage children's car insurance premiums fall, can do a number of things to help kids who have just passed their test stay safe on the road, it has been claimed.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, novice drivers - particularly those aged under 20 - are most likely to be involved in an accident relatively soon after they qualify.

The group suggested parents encourage their children to keep up lessons with a professional instructor after they pass their test.

It also advised mums and dads to accompany their kids on journeys they make regularly, pointing out any potential danger areas.

In addition, parents were told going along on trips while kids get used to driving at night, in poor visibility and on rural roads, was a good idea.

Meanwhile, IAM recently said mums and dads could be useful in helping to change the attitude of some young people to driving without insurance.
