13 November 2008 'There needs to be a crackdown on uninsured drivers'

Uninsured drivers must be stopped People who get behind the wheel without car insurance need to be stopped, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has said.

In order to do this, attitudes among the worst offenders - young, male drivers - will have to change, the group claimed.

Director Neil Greig stated: "These drivers have a high risk of crashing and there is a perception among their peers that they can get away with it."

He added motorists who obeyed the law needed to feel the authorities were targeting the "reckless minority" and making every effort to stop them.

According to IAM, there are a number of measures which could help tackle the problem, including starting to educate children at school about such issues and getting parents involved.

Meanwhile, the group recently reported motorists needed to ensure leaves did not accumulate on their vehicles between the bonnet and the windscreen if they wanted to avoid expensive repairs or even a car insurance claim.
