12 November 2008 Brits 'lose thousands in holiday club scam'

Tenerife Holidaymakers who make the effort to hunt for the cheapest possible travel insurance for a trip could end up losing any savings made plus a lot more if they are not on their guard, according to the Office of Fair Trading.

The body's Scambusters Team has warned Brits heading abroad that large numbers of people have been convinced to part with thousands of pounds in return for very little.

Resorts being targeted include ones in Gran Canaria, Malaga, Marbella and Tenerife.

Touts hand out scratchcards which advise people they have won a prize.

Individuals are then conned into attending a lengthy sales presentation in order to collect their prize and it is here some are persuaded hand over significant amounts of money in order to join an exclusive holiday club, which proves to be virtually worthless.

Spokesperson Mike Haley commented: "Bogus holiday clubs ruin thousands of holidays every year leaving holidaymakers with large bills for near worthless holiday club memberships."

In other news, Lonely Planet recently claimed Iceland is currently better value than ever before as a tourist destination.
