11 November 2008 Crackdown on uninsured drivers 'appears to be working'

Number of uninsured drivers falls Motorists who have been involved in an accident with uninsured drivers may welcome the news that the number of rogue drivers on UK roads has fallen.

Figures from the Department for Transport seem to suggest a police crackdown has been effective.

The percentage of uninsured motorists has dropped from 1.9 per cent in 2006 to 1.2 per cent this year.

Meanwhile, the statistics also revealed the number of drivers without valid licences has halved during the same period and the proportion of motorists without an up-to-date MOT certificate has decreased from 4.2 per cent to 1.5 per cent.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said he was delighted by the news.

He stated the government had been keen to concentrate on the problem as 160 people are killed every year by uninsured drivers.

"That is why we gave the police increased powers to detect, seize and destroy vehicles being driven without insurance," he added.

Recently, Mr Fitzpatrick launched a campaign highlighting the dangers of travelling in a vehicle without wearing a seatbelt.
