10 November 2008 Motorists may want to take out breakdown cover before winter
Having breakdown cover could be more important than ever during the winter months, if comments by the Highways Agency are anything to go by.Research by the group has revealed half of UK motorists would be prepared to hit the road after hearing a severe weather warning and a third would not carry out checks on their vehicles before setting off.
However, the survey also showed 92 per cent of drivers would look for information on travel conditions prior to leaving.
Derek Turner, director of network operations at the Highways Agency, said if motorists had to head out in more treacherous travel conditions it was important they were adequately prepared.
He stated: "Being caught out by cold weather, strong winds or heavy rain isn't nice, especially if you've broken down."
Mr Turner advised motorists to carry a severe weather kit, carry out simple vehicle checks before leaving home and plan their journeys in advance.
In other news, the Highways Agency recently revealed the speed limit on the hard shoulder of the M42 near Birmingham was being raised to 60 mph, following a successful trial.
