Driving around with unnecessary items in the boot of a car can lead to wasted money on fuel, it was advised this week.Tim Anderson, Energy Saving Trust smarter driving expert, spoke on behalf of government-led campaign ACT ON CO2 and explained that the heavier a car is, the harder the engine has to work and the more fuel it has to use.
So by clearing out the boot and ensuring there is nothing in there that is weighing the car down, car insurance customers could save fuel and therefore spend less on it.
Mr Anderson's comments follow research from the Department for Transport, which discovered that almost a quarter (23 per cent) of motorists always keep clothes or shoes in their boot, while 12 per cent do not actually remember the last time they cleared it out.
Some 73 per cent admitted they would be more likely to keep their boot clear now they knew doing so could save money and carbon emissions.
