05 November 2008 New Caterham Cars model to be built by the public

Caterham will allow members of the public to build its new car Car insurance customers are likely to be happy to hear manufacturer Caterham Cars plans to allow members of the public, regardless of their level of engineering experience, to design its next model.

The company explains it is working together with Project Splitwheel - an automotive consultancy firm - to give car enthusiasts from around the world the chance to submit ideas and concepts for the new vehicle.

Registration for a website run by Project Splitwheel - which will include features such as blogs, articles and a Wikipedia-style user-edited knowledge database - is currently open, with work on the project set to begin in earnest in 2009.

"Starting from a blank sheet of paper and with very few restrictions in place, the result should be an exciting and truly unique performance vehicle," Caterham Cars states, noting that environmental issues are to be taken into consideration in the building of the vehicle.

The Caterham 7 was built by Colin Chapman approximately 50 years ago, the company notes.
