04 November 2008 Report: Vehicle theft down

Always take adeuate security measure when it comes to your car A new report has revealed vehicle thefts are down - but car insurance customers should not get complacent.

Figures from the Home Office show thefts fell by 12 per cent in the 12 months ending this June, but there are warnings that criminals are becoming more sophisticated.

According to Stuart Chapman, police relationships manager at vehicle tracking company Tracker, many people have had their cars stolen after keys were taken during a robbery.

He explained motorists may be confused by statistics because this crime would not be classed as vehicle theft.

"There have also been examples of fraud, where clients have been trying to sell their cars and unwittingly parted company with the vehicle in exchange for a forged banker's draft," Mr Chapman added.

Recently, drivers were urged by the Institute of Advanced Motorists to review their habits to avoid accidents on darker nights.
