03 November 2008 Driving has "immense" consequences for the environment

The environmental consequences of driving are "immense" but can be reduces by eco-motoring techniques, it was suggested today.

Driving Standards Agency assistant chief driving examiner Bob Millard highlighted the ways people can change their style of hitting the road in a more eco-conscious fashion, such as avoiding heavy acceleration and braking.

However, there will be some people who cannot break out of longstanding bad habits, he added.

"Those of us that drive can help by amending our driving style to one that uses less fuel ... of course the less fuel we use, the more money we can save," Mr Millard explained.

Other eco-driving habits can include changing gear at 2,000-2,500rpm and turning off a car's air-conditioning system.

Turning the engine off when sat in heavy traffic can also minimise carbon emissions from a vehicle, while maintaining correctly inflated tyres means the engine does not have to work so hard and burn as much fuel.
