30 October 2008 America is not an "expensive destination"

Illinois People taking out travel insurance for a holiday in America will still find the country is good value for money, one industry body has suggested.

The Association of British Travel Agents said, despite the strength of the dollar in comparison to the pound, the area is not "a very expensive destination".

Sean Tipton from the group claimed: "The strong dollar is not insignificant but it doesn't mean that the US has suddenly become unaffordable."

He added: "In terms of eating out and shopping, it is a lot cheaper there on the whole."

BusinessWire recently reported the dollar has risen in value against the pound by 29 per cent since July 2008.

Meanwhile, data provided by the Office for National Statistics has shown that in the 12 months before August 2008 the number of people from the UK visiting America increased by one per cent to 4.8 million - compared with the preceding 12 months.
