The number of people looking for car insurance for electric vehicles could be set to rise after the government demonstrated its support for the zero-emission models.

Earlier this week a number of futuristic electric cars were invited to attend Downing Street.

This coincided with a government meeting to discuss strategies to boost the mass production of such vehicles.

One of the cars which attended the Prime Minister's residence was a TH!NK city.

Already available in Norway, the model is due to go on sale in the UK in 2009.

The manufacturer of the vehicle pointed out - as well as silent running and zero emissions - the TH!NK city can save motorists money as it is exempt from the London congestion charge and from road tax.

With a maximum speed of 65 mph, the car can travel for 112 miles on a fully charged battery.

The vehicle made its official debut in the UK at the 2008 British International Motor Show.
