28 October 2008 Government 'gets behind electric cars'
The number of people looking for car insurance for electric vehicles could be set to rise after the government demonstrated its support for the zero-emission models.Earlier this week a number of futuristic electric cars were invited to attend Downing Street.
This coincided with a government meeting to discuss strategies to boost the mass production of such vehicles.
One of the cars which attended the Prime Minister's residence was a TH!NK city.
Already available in Norway, the model is due to go on sale in the UK in 2009.
The manufacturer of the vehicle pointed out - as well as silent running and zero emissions - the TH!NK city can save motorists money as it is exempt from the London congestion charge and from road tax.
With a maximum speed of 65 mph, the car can travel for 112 miles on a fully charged battery.
The vehicle made its official debut in the UK at the 2008 British International Motor Show.
