27 October 2008 Motorists 'need to take care when driving in the dark'

Driving in the dark Now the clocks have gone back, motorists need to demonstrate caution on the road if they want to avoid being involved in an accident and having to make a car insurance claim, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has suggested.

The group pointed out, most people will probably find they are driving home in the dark when they leave the office.

It stated, motorists should take extra care during winter months as reduced visibility means signs, objects and other vehicles are harder to make out.

The organisation added, bad weather conditions can also make the journey home more treacherous.

Motorists are advised to always check they turn their lights off before leaving a vehicle or risk a flat battery.

The IAM also claimed now is a good time for vehicle owners to test a battery is healthy, otherwise they could find themselves waiting for a breakdown service "on a wet and windy roadside".

In other news, the group recently criticised plans to remove speed cameras in Swindon.
