27 October 2008 Driving style 'is as important as the model you choose'
People who buy a smaller vehicle, in a bid to qualify for cheaper car insurance and cut other motoring costs, may not make the savings they were hoping for if they do not adapt their driving style as well, according to Clean Green Cars. The company has pointed out, during a test, a Mini Clubman driven without a thought for fuel economy fell short of its advertised capability of 68.9 mpg by some 25 per cent.
However, it added a Mini John Cooper Works improved on its official rating by 23 per cent during the MPG Marathon, when the motorist made an effort drive as smoothly as possible.
Jay Nagley from Clean Green Cars said it was important to remember fuel economy can vary dramatically depending upon behaviour behind the wheel.
He stated: "Learning to drive in an eco-friendly way can better official figures by 25 per cent or more."
Recently, Clean Green Cars revealed new car carbon emissions had dropped by 4.5 per cent in the third quarter of 2008.
