A list of the UK locations where properties are most at risk from thefts and burglaries has been published, home insurance customers might be interested to know.

According to moneysupermarket.com, the unluckiest home insurance customers are those living in Bristol, Doncaster and Canvey Island.

The comparison site found almost six per cent of homes in Doncaster, South Yorkshire and Bristol, in the west country, have made a claim for theft or burglary in the last year.

Meanwhile, five per cent of house insurance customers in Canvey Island, off the Essex Coast, have made claims in the same period.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com said: "Unfortunately, I'm not amazed to see several London postcodes in the top 20 when it comes to theft and burglary, but I didn't expect to see Doncaster and Bristol snatching the top spots from London."

He went on to suggest the data could not be used to judge how important having home insurance was, as it is vital for everyone.

Many insurers are urging people to ensure their homes are secure, especially as the dark nights draw in.
