23 October 2008 Safety group claims it is time for a change

Calls for clocks to be changed In news which may be of interest to drivers who have had to make a van insurance claim after being involved in an accident on a winter's evening, a safety group is calling on the government to make changes to British timekeeping in order to improve road safety.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) has urged those in power to keep the clocks ahead of Greenwich Mean Time - by one hour in winter and two in the summer.

It cited a study which showed 450 deaths and serious injuries a year could be prevented by adopting that system.

The charity added - when British Summer Time was adopted all year round between 1968 and 1971 - road accident figures improved.

Rospa chief executive Tom Mullarkey stated: "Our Victorian forbears set up an imperfect system and ... it is vital to arrange our daylight usage in a way that suits the way we live in the modern world."

Meanwhile, the organisation recently announced it was looking into improving the safety of young people who drive as part of their job.
