21 October 2008 Over half of drivers 'cannot identify road signs'

Road sign Motorists with third party car insurance could end up making an expensive mistake because they do not understand road signs, if the results of new research are anything to go by.

A study by Avis Rent A Car found 53 per cent of drivers struggled to identify a series of images found on highways across Britain and the rest of Europe.

Some 54 per cent of participants thought the No Motor Vehicles Allowed sign meant All Vehicles Permitted and 20 per cent of those questioned identified No Overtaking as indicating they were approaching a dual carriageway.

Commercial director at Avis Daniel McCarthy said he had expected people to struggle with images which were more commonly seen abroad but he was surprised by the findings from the study.

"It is well known that foreign road signs can cause UK motorists headaches, but we were shocked to see that even the simplest of UK signs had drivers stumped," he stated.

Motorists with third party insurance who cause an accident because they fail to understand highway instructions could find it is an expensive mistake, as they will have to shell out for any repairs their own car requires.
